Metabones Sony FZ to Canon EF adapter.

There was one of these at IBC last year. A new version appeared again this year at IBC and it’s really nice. I so hope that this becomes a real product. It fits the Sony PMW-F5 and PMW-F55 cameras (and I must assume the PMW-F3 too). It takes it’s power from the camera and will control a Canon EF lens. Aperture is controlled by a large aperture ring which has clear aperture marking visible at the side of the adapter. No fiddly knobs or dials, no power cable and a real aperture scale. In addition I believe you will get an aperture display in the viewfinder. The EF Lens mount features a large locking ring so the lens won’t twist or rotate once mounted, something essential if you are going to use a follow focus. This version was much nicer than the one shown last year. I really hope it becomes a real product as I’d like one for my F5.

  1. This adapter would be really nice on our F55. We have a Canon 17-120mm Cine Servo pl mount lens on our F55 that we really love, but for small setups with exactly the lens pictured in your photo or with our fantastic Canon 70-200 2.8 lens this would be the perfect adapter. Aperture display in the viewfinder almost sounds too good to be true.
Did you hear anything from the Metabones people about the development and release date of this adapter? I checked the Metabones website several times after your news about the earlier iteration of this adapter, but it looks like a secret project they only show on tradeshows…

    1. Yes, it’s like a skunk works project. I’m sure they will sell a bunch, but I guess the big volume sales are in the E-Mount adapters, so this probably is a low priority which is a great shame as clearly a lot of thought has gone into the design and it appears to be a finished product.

  2. I would also love any updates anyone has on this. Ive been waiting for some time now for an adapter like this to come out.

  3. This is a very, VERY, exciting product. I’ve been pestering Metabones about one of these from day one of the first Speedbooster arriving on the scene. I have a couple of Zeiss Compact Zooms, and the idea of having (effectively) a 19.5-55mm T/2 and 50-140mm T/2 in lightweight housings, with proper cine mechanics, is pretty damn exciting.
