iPad as monitor

Post by timb » November 23rd, 2011, 7:30 am

I saw a demo of Sony's XMPilot software recently and it lets you use an iPad (or smart phone) as a monitor. You have to have a Sony camera that is compatible with their WiFi adapter (CBK-WA01) and the Camera and software key. The XMPilot software will run on an iPad during Live Logging mode giving you the ability to view what you are shooting on the iPad. You also have the ability to add meta data, essence marks etc. Overall it looks to be a great system !

It can be used with Camcorders such as the PDW-700, PDW-F800 and PMW-500.

XM-Pilot has been around for a while now. The data side also works with the F3.

You only get a video feed with the cameras that have the Proxy encoder, so PDW-700/F800. The PMW-500 does not have the extra encoder (like the F3) so you can only transfer data such as shot markers, notes, file names and metadata.

Hi Louis,

I don't think it works with the EX3 as they don't have either the USB port or record proxy video files.

Also as the video is only the proxy video file being used its not great quality, but you can judge your framing / lighting off it.

Hi Louis,

I would give it a try and please let us know how it goes. Sorry I have had no experience with either a tablet PC with HDMI or the F3

You can use an ipad as a monitor if you get a Teradeck Cube: http://www.teradek.com/pages/cube

Ipads and PC's are not designed to be monitors. Their color and gamma response is different to proper monitors.
