PMW 100 vs EX1-R

Post by jc957 » April 22nd, 2012, 4:44 pm

We were getting ready to pull the trigger on purchasing an EX1-R but after seeing the specs of the new PMW 100, I'm having a tough time seeing the benefits of paying the extra money for the EX1-R. I would love some feedback from anyone that may have had a chance to shoot with the both. Thanks!!

I just realized the 100 is only a single sensor...that alone is enough for me. But I'm still interested on feedback from anyone that has had a chance to shoot with the 100.

I'm hoping to get one for review soon, but unless size is an issue I'd still go for the EX1R.

I went to see the PMW100 as a possible replacement (albeit slight downgrade) from my Sony EX1 (my lens assembly having just given up on me during a shoot and now in need of costly replacement). I was very disappointed with the picture quality and the overall look of the colours in the image - those 3 CMOS chips in the EX range obviously make a big difference! Also, the camera does not feel like a professional tool, more like a high-spec home video camera - for example, having the focus and zoom on the same ring makes framing up very long winded. It actually reminded me a lot of the old PD-100. I think the PMW100 is targeting journalists and corporations that have relatively simple video needs and I can see it being useful for smaller projects. Though it puzzles me then, why Sony would incorporate a great 50Mbit codec on to the back of such a poor quality lens and chip. We really need a portable (EX1 size or smaller) and robust 3x 1/2" sensor 50Mbit EX replacement!

EX1R is definitely a far superior camera to the PMW100. I've been very disappointed by the PMW100. I agree with gwf that it is aimed as a point and shoot for video journalists, it is not what I would regard as a professional camera. The View Finder on the rear is really really awful, even worse than the original EX1 EVF. The NX30 produces a much better picture.
