Hi
I updated my PMW500 to version 1.2.. during phase two I noticed to much panic.. that the VF had gone "dead" and it looked like there was no power or some problem.. so i just took it into Sony down the road and they did it all for free ! thanks Sony.. my question is .. is it normal for this to happen,Sony said it was.. and if so I really think they should say that in the read me,s.. instead of just saying no messages in the VF in phase 2 !!

Yes' it is quite normal as at this point in the process the camera has no operating system other than a boot loader that installs the software.
