Can a heavy lens damage your camera?

Post by chris@loughlin.tv » April 1st, 2012, 4:43 pm

Does anyone know if there's a recommended maximum safe unsupported lens weight for a PMW-350? I've recently acquired a Fujinon HA22x7.3 BERM-M48 which weights 3Kg (6.6lb). It's a gorgeous lens, but very heavy! I just wonder if leaving it on the camera is straining or possibly distorting the lens mount. Does anyone have any knowledge of reccomended maximum lens weights? I can't find anything in the PMW manual or on the Sony Website. My prime support has just run out so I can't ask them anymore...

The HA22 is probably about as heavy as you want to go unsupported. Of course if your rough with the camera the chances of doing damage increase, but you should be OK with the HA22.
