F55 a F5

Looks like Sony is upping the anti again. anyone see these live yet?
Is the F3 dead? didn't really seem to catch on in real broadcast circles.

The F3 is not dead and will continue to be a current model alongside the F5 and F55.

The F5/F55 are quite different to the F3. The F3 can be used handycam style and is light and compact. The F5/F55 are shoulder mount cameras, heavier and bulkier. The image quality from a F3 will be extremely close to the F5/F55 in HD modes. It is possible that the F3 will actually have less noise than the F5 as the F3's sensor is tailored for HD while the F5's is designed for 4K.

Overall the cost of ownership of an F5 will be quite a bit higher than an F3. For example the F5 requires more expensive V-Lock batteries which again are bigger and bulkier and you'll need more of them to satisfy the higher power needs.

The F3 will continue to offer incredible image quality in a very affordable package. The F5/F55 take you to the next level, but that will cost more money and whether your customers will see a difference is debatable.

I thinki it will be a long while before HD is dead, let alont the F3 become "end of life". It is one of the greatest 35mm camers out there for cinema and broadcast, especially for a "first generation" cam meant to up the anti for 35mm DSLR shooters.

To me the F5/F55 are primarily cinema cameras, provisioned with some abilities to record 2k internally (F5) and even 4k internally (F55) for those higher end projects that need it, or for those who want to feel "future proofed" against the inevitable 4k world.

Exciting times, that's for sure.

The new F3 will be dead when HD is dead - which quite obviously will not be for quite some long time.
