Mac Mini for FCP

Post by strydertv » October 26th, 2011, 2:03 pm

Has anyone tried using a Mac Mini for Final Cut Pro editing? I need to do 1920x1080 50i work for the main broadcasters. I am assuming the more powerful server version with the quad core would be better and I would upgrade the RAM to 8GB and probably have a 256GB SSD drive and a 750GB 7200 HDD. Would the graphics be fast enough?

I want to use it in a sat truck where I have existing monitors but limited desk and storage space so don't want the desk clutter of a Powerbook Pro or the size of the iMac or MacPro.

You can use a MacMini for sure, but expansion is a little limited. Not sure you can get both an SSD and HD in there.

That will be fine, the new MacMini Server version supports twin drives and one of the options is for a 750 HDD and 250 SDD. I was just concerned the graphics card may be too slow for 1920x1080i and if a 2.0GHz Quad i7 would be up to it

It's going to depend on the type of work you want to do. For general editing you should be fine. I have a i5 13" macbook with the intel graphics and it is fine for editing and basic effects. Motion will not be very good on it, you won't get real time performance because of the graphics card.
