NEX-FS100 - living up to expectations?

Post by Duke M. » June 2nd, 2011, 3:29 am

It has the same sensor as the F3, but...

No ND filters
No HD-SDI out
No DC power in making it hard to use IDX or Swit brick batteries

It does have 1080p at 60fps.
It does go up to 30db gain.
It does have very low noise images at almost all gain levels.

Yes, I agree that the FS100 has some limitations. It also has reduced dynamic range compared to the F3. But it is still a very capable camera and can produce an amazing image. Cameras are shipping now so hopefully we will start to see more reviews and more footage.

I just bought a FS-100 and a Ninja recorder...
I'll post my observations after my first shoot.

Hi Alister and Kerrigan and of course, HarryLlama. I have the SONY FS-100 and the Ninja and I used it to record a diary of me for 6 weeks. I was seated and lit by a SONY 1 x 1 Bicolor and LowelV light. I used the Ninja and based on what I saw when editing and outputting to Blu-ray this combination gave me an overall quality that matched the F3 we have. I used a Zeiss Prime and the results were beautiful. I have yet to use our F3 with s-log for comparison but without S-Log as long as the lighting is adequate I think the FS-100 footage is extremely compatible with F3 footage

Thanks for the feedback jsoqs.

The FS100 performance is very similar to the F3. For the money the FS100 is a great deal. It's not quite as good as an F3 and in terms of dynamic range a couple of stops behind an S-Log F3.

Having said that we have to remember that more important than the camera itself, is the way you use it. :)
