PMW-F3 Reds are over saturated

Post by carlosm2112 » December 24th, 2012, 6:12 am

Hi,
I've been shooting with my F3 and just noticed that red colors really "pop" and look over saturated. If you watch the movie "Red Hook Summer" by Spike Lee, you can see much of what I'm talking about when they shoot inside the chapel with the red crosses on the stained glass windows and the gangsters wearing red clothing in sunlight. Reds seem to be over saturated and/or gamma is off the charts. Can someone suggest a setting to minimize this? Thanks

I couldn't agree with you more. Every time I shoot, no matter how I white balance I always end up with RED in the mid-tones and always have to knock it out a bit in post to get a more pleasing and better looking image.

Just look at the all the excessive red going on in these raw frame grabs:

I don't have corrected versions but do have final graded versions:

Re: PMW-F3 Gamma or Red Color Issue

Post by carlosm2112 » May 18th, 2013, 5:12 am

Here is an example of the problem I'm having. I find that reds seem way over-saturated and there seems to be a gamma issue (see the guy's hat). Granted, I believe the shot is over exposed. Is there a profile or settings to reduce or eliminate this? Mr. Allister Chapman, if you're reading this - is this an issue with all Sony cameras?

I see this same issue in the Spike Lee Movie - Red Hook Summer. I guess you have to really watch your exposure outside and when shooting red subjects.

What are you editing with. I've not seen reds blow out like that. It may be your edit software clipping the luma as it looks a little over exposed. Also your knee settings may need looking at.

Allister,
I think I figured out what the issue is. First, this is footage straight out of the F3 camera captured to AJA Ki Pro Mini (The XDCAM footage looks the same). The camera was set to ISO 800. I left it that way since the camera is rated at ISO 800. I guess you shouldn't shoot at that ISO in broad daylight. I discovered that if I lower the ISO to 400 or lower, the reds don't over-saturate. What ISO do you shoot your exterior daylight footage at?
