FS-700 Flat - Near Log

Post by alisterchapman » September 21st, 2012, 6:06 pm

This profile is designed to get the maximum dynamic range from the camera. It gives a flat almost log type image that will need grading in most cases.

Black Level +1
Gamma Cine 4
Black Gamma Range Low, Level +7
Knee Mode Manual, Manual Set: Point 105, Slope +5
Colour Mode Pro Level 8
Colour Level -2
Detail Level -7 Manual Set Off
Color Phase -2
Color Depth R+2, G-1, B 0, C-1, M+2, Y 0

Interesting,
thank you for sharing.
I also agree that changing the colour phase gives a more natural tone.
(The NEX series of cameras are different from the EX series. Red instead of yellow/green.)
One small question though, wouldn't a lower slope point give a smoother roll off into the highlights?
Or is that only valid when applied to a standard gamma?

kind regards
Dennis

The cinegammas already have a very gentle highlight roll off, so no need to use the knee. Adding a knee would not increase dynamic range and would reduce the recording signal range. Given this is an 8 bit camera you want to maximise that recording range as much as possible.

Ok, I get it. The knee is not automatically off when Cinegammas are used.
Thanks!

I tried this flat pp out and really liked it a lot. Very filmic dynamic range. I used it to shoot some leaping salmon in a river which had some really white hot spots and contrasty black areas and it dealt with it very well. Managed to keep detail in the whites with some room to spare. I transferred to prores HQ using 5d to RGB (which automatically drops the super whites to 100 in a sympathetic way that doesn't clip) then gave a quick grade in FCP 7. This is now my default pp, thanks for sharing :0)

Thanks a lot, Alister!
I need to ask you this: as far as I know Cinegamma 4 is good for enough light, but in low light will be better to use Cinegamma 3 - it's give us less noise ... do we need to change any of other parameters in your profile, if we use Cine 3 gamma?
( sorry for my English, I never learn it in school... )

You can use Cinegamma 3 in place of Cinegamma 4. You won't get quite as much dynamic range, but the difference is very small.

So i've used this profile to much effect but i also film at a concerthall regularly. The higlights clip like crazy when i film there due to the superstrong LED podium lights. I want to keep as much DR as i can but i need to get rid of the higlight problem. A concert is usually a dark place so a good blackgamma is key i guess.

What if i use the max dr setting but set Cine-3 and tweak the knee to 90% point and slope 0. how many stops do i lose?
