PAL Conversion Necessary?

Post by snuforeo » February 24th, 2013, 12:55 am

Alister - I need to give some specs for someone to shoot footage over in Croatia (we will edit in U.S.A.). Since I can give some direction on camera, etc. - should I have them convert footage to NTSC - or dependent on the camera - they can just shoot NTSC, correct (I guess I'm asking if PAL is still a major issue with the footage). They would just need to save the files and send those to me as (for example) - h.264?

I believe you are in a PAL country - I'm guessing you have developed a decent workflow. We could work off of either FCP or CS6.

I appreciate any information.

If it's HD then there isn't really any such thing as PAL or NTSC. The only difference is the frame rates. The current sony cameras offer different "regions" based on whether the local SD TV is PAL or NTSC and this sets the appropriate frame rates for that area.

I would recommend your shooter shoots either 30i (60i) or 30p. If under artificial lights they might have to set the shutter to 1/50 or 1/100 to avoid flicker.
