Thanks Alister!
I remember you posted some in-camera film look LUTs a while ago with under/overexposure compensation. I’m a little bit confused about its use. When I change EI, MLUT applies the EI gain (change from 2000 to 1000, image gets dark one stop). So how do I use those film look LUTs in camera?
In the camera you should only ever use the zero or standard ISO LUT. The compensated LUT’s are just for post.
Hi Alistair, first of all, many thanks for all of your posts and videos on this subject, it’s all very helpful! I have a question about what is under/over/zero with Cine EI. On the FS7 the sensor is rated at ISO2000 and so what is Zero? Is it EI2000? Because I’ve read that you use EI800 mostly and another colleague said to never go over EI1250 when shooting indoors. Essentially I’m just looking for a way to expose slog3 correctly using a 709 LUT or Look which can (currently) only be applied when in Cine EI mode on the FS7. Thanks in advance.
Zero would be 2000EI. I normally shoot at 1000EI or 800EI this results in footage that is exposed one stop over to which you add a LUT designed for +1 stop or one stop over to bring the brightness back down to normal. The post production level reduction results in a significant noise reduction.
Hi Alister,
That’s just perfect ! Would you mind to tell us which EI have you used to set up the 3 different compensated LUTs ? Perhaps 1500, 100 and 500 for low EI ?
Thanks,
Patrick
A LUT that I have indicated as +1 or one over is for footage one stop over exposed. One stop over would result from shoot with an EI one stop lower than base. So in the case of the FS7 or F5 where base is 2000ISO that would be 1000EI.
Dear Mr. Chapman, thank you so much for the LUTs!
Would it be possible to get this very same LUT with a rating of 800ISO / EI instead of 1000ISO as well? So basically with 1.3 Stops of a difference?
Since I record externally from my FS7 I cant use Cine EI (since it bakes them in on
the HDMI Out) therefore I apply your LUTs on my external monitor for exposure references. An 800 EI Monitoring LUT would therefore be amazing. Thanks in advance.
Wonderful ! YOu save one of my first shoot with CineEI Slog-3 and overexposed media… (I still don’t understand why).
Thanks again ! I pay the coffee !!!
Hi Alister,
You say that these LUT’s are based off TypeA and 709(800)? Both of these require different IRE values for 90% white? REC709(800) requires 90% IRE and Type 71% IRE. I am using the Arri Look Compensated LUT’s. Which are they based off and what IRE am I aiming for for 90% wjhite?
Thanks.
Arri look is 70%
Hi Alister – Love these LUTs! Do you know of a good converter to make them 1D which is required for use with a Zacuto Gratical Eye?
You can use LUTCalc to analyse LUT’s and create new ones based on that. Or just roll your own LUT’s with LUTCalc and export them as Gratical LUT’s.
Hi Alister,
Are these suitable for the FX6 to work with in post?

Thanks and Merry Christmas!
Yes, absolutely.
