It’s a shame this device can’t be used with a FS5. I really wonder why.
I’m led to believe it’s due to either limited processing or limited memory space for different formats.
This is really great news – was torn between using the fairly expensive v90 cards along with a shinobi for monitoring, OR my Shogun Inferno to record ProRes 422 (not raw) which has always been just slightly too big for handheld work; this is really welcome as I’ve got loads of SSDs for my Ninja/Shogun already. So prob will buy the SDI/Raw upgrade for my Ninja V and maybe one CFexpress card for high frame rate work.
Question: will the Ninja V work purely as a monitor when doing 100fps work to a CFexpress card?
It will work as a monitor at all frame rates, but of course when shooting 100/120 fps the camera only outputs at the base rate, not the HFR rate.
Thanks – one other question. The FS5 recorded a 1080p sort of backup onto SD cards when RAW + XAVC was selected. This came in handy exactly once for me when some footage from my Shogun came back damaged due to cold weather operation but that’s enough for me to do it all the time. Does the FX6 do the same (1080p XAVC when recording RAW) or has that been upped to 4K? Sorry it’s unclear in the manual…!
Thanks for useful information and great tips regarding recording raw from Fx9 and FX6.
Just curious since I have a AXS-R5 collecting dust on the shelf; is it possible recording 16bit raw with the old Sony HXR-IFR5 (+R5) from FX9/FX6? I am not sure the sdi raw (in) on the HXR-IFR5 is compatible with raw out from these cameras… Will there be any quality benefits with this method compared to 12 bit prores raw on the Ninja?
The IFR5 won’t work with the FX6/FX9 as these now have a 16 bit output, the FS5 etc were all 12 bit. It’s a shame as the Sony Raw codec is very easy to work with an can be used directly in Resolve etc.
That’s a pity. Thanks
Too much to learn thanks to you Alister! Just one question. The prores raw from sony a7siii is log raw. Is the prores raw from FS5 also a log raw with the shogun inferno or Ninja V+ SDI module.
Thanks again!
No, the ProResRaw from the FS5 is 12 bit linear as this is what the camera outputs which is why it is not nearly as good as the 12 bit Log raw that is recorded from the 16 bit linear that the A7SIII outputs.
Thank you Alister for this very useful information!
